Planting for Her Future: OCIPAT’s Reforestation Project in Thomazeau

In the photo, Darline Cajuste, a tree that is not much smaller than she is. Her grip is careful and a little protective. She may not realize it yet, but the tree and the girl are growing up together.

That image is why OCIPAT planted 113 trees in Thomazeau this summer. We did not plant them for ourselves or for a single season. We planted them for her, and for every child in Thomazeau who will inherit the land we leave behind.

Why Trees, and Why Now

Thomazeau's land has been under pressure for a long time. Trees have been cut for farming, fuel, and income, and when the trees disappear, the soil goes with them. Rain washes away fertile topsoil, farmland yields less, and flooding gets worse.

Reforestation is one of the most practical ways to reverse that cycle. Roots hold the soil in place, and shade protects crops and cools the surrounding land. Over time, healthy trees help the ground retain water and give farming families a more reliable future. Our volunteers planted a mix of fruit trees and drought-resistant ones for their shade and the long-term benefits they provide to the soil.

What We Did

On July 23rd 2026, OCIPAT worked with 25 volunteers and community members to plant 113 trees across the city. The trees were sourced from local nurseries and their kinds were very prevalent all around the city before people were forced to cut them for fuel and income. Children took part alongside the adults, and for many of them it was their first time planting a tree.

A Tree Is a Promise

A tree planted today is a long-term commitment. It will take years to reach its full size, which means the people who plant it are trusting that someone will still be here to enjoy it.

That is how we think about our work. The girl in our photo may one day sit in the shade of the tree she held that day, or harvest its fruit, or walk past it on the way to school and remember she helped put it there. Her future is the reason we planted it.

What Comes Next

Planting is only the beginning. Young trees need care, so we are [describe your follow-up plans, such as community caretaking, regular check-ins, or replanting where needed]. We also hope to expand the project, and we invite the people of Thomazeau to help protect and grow what we started.
